Chimes of St James, Ilfracombe
The Restaurant in St James Place has recently been taken over by local chef John Lawnikowicz who has come up with a mouthwatering menu with a Mediterranean flavour.
Dishes vary from nibbles of hummus and olives for those looking for a light bite, to fresh fish of the day, homemade meatballs or grilled halloumi with mediterranean vegetables for the hungrier guest! Chef Lawnikowicz has over 10 years experience in the kitchen, cutting his teeth in the kitchen at the Mortehoe Brasserise. He continued to chef here for 3 years before taking up a position at Damien Hirst's Ilfracombe eatery The Quay Restaurant, where he remained for 5 years until they closed a couple of years back. He has since been working at The Woolacombe Bay Hotel before deciding to open his own business at the end of last year.
The Restaurant seats 58 in total with space for 26 inside and 32 on the verandah and terrace. Chimes will be open every day from Friday-Tuesday from 10am until late, closing on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Lunch will be served between 12pm until 3pm and dinner from 6.30pm until 9.30pm. To book a table call 01271 866233.
A very good restaurant offering a variety of food including fish dishes. I have to say that the food is of high quality and I would recommend it with no hesitation. As always a restaurant depends on its chef, and John is very passionate about his food and this comes across in how the food is prepared and cooked. I have eaten there several times and will be booking again soon.

Clarets Restaurant, Ilfracombe
Clarets restaurant was formerly home to Coates Dairy and is beleived to have been either a stables, blacksmiths, or both many years ago.
In 2006 the building was completely derelict, barely even having a roof. Kelvin Turner, a builder of many years experience, imediately saw the potential the building had and Clare, although slightly more hesitant, went along with it and between them set to work applying for planning permission and drawing up plans.
Work on the building started in March 2007 and by October 2007 Clarets was ready for opening, and the rest is history.
When you visit the restaurant you will now find Clare in the kitchen, cooking up delicious meals.
Opening hours: Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 7pm.

Coombe Cottage Restaurant, Ilfracombe
Taken over by Paul and Kate in 2005, Combe Cottage is one of the oldest, if not the oldest cafe in Ilfracombe serving the town for over 70 years! The original building probably dates from the mid to late 18th century and was previously two small cottages. Beams and other period features remain adding character to the restaurant area.
Acclaimed chef Kate qualified in Yorkshire and has cooked in Europe and beyond including cooking for royalty whilst chef at County Hall in Cardiff. Kate blends traditional and modern influences to produce high quality dishes at affordable prices. Self confessed foodies the owners strive to use local ingredients to deliver great food and a welcoming atmosphere. This has been recognised by excellent reviews in the local and national press.
At Combe Cottage Restaurant and Café the emphasis is on home cooked meals using fresh local ingredients. We are proud to support our local producers and suppliers.
Full of character and charm our restaurant is ideally situated on the bustling Ilfracombe High Street. We would like to extend a warm welcome to all.

Grass Roots, Ilfracombe
Grassroots Vegetarian Cafe in Ilfracombe is a refreshingly diferent cafe centrally located on the High Street in Ilfracombe. Not only is the menu and the food itself modern, there's plenty of healthy local produce put together with an exciting breakfast, lunchtime and evening (Friday /Saturday only) menus. Grassroots Cafe offers a warm welcome to regular and visiting customers, locally and from further afield. Children are most welcome in this cafe as they have their own indoor play area to keep them entertained and parents and carers can sit and enjoy a hearty range of wholesome food for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea or simply just relax with a fairtrade coffee and a sumptuous piece of cake.
A recommendation from one my friends was the reason for choosing this restaurant. As a meat eater I was sceptical about going and that the food would be just plain boring… but how wrong I was! The food is of high quality and there is lots of it. The Vegetarian restaurant offers three rotating menus with three choices per course. Another excellent idea is that you bring your own alcohol. I was so impressed that I have been back 5 times since my first visit and I would recommend it again and again.
