South Hooe Mine is situated 1.5 miles southwest of Bere Alston near Tavistock. The mine worked from Engine Shaft and Spurgin Shaft. Also known as Tamar Silver Lead Mine (from 1835), South Hooe also worked with South Tamar Mine being known as South Tamar Consols between 1820 and 1821. South Hooe is situated on the north side of the Tamar River. It began working in the early 1800's, the Silver raised from the mine was found to be of high grade, almost 180 ounces to the ton, with Lead at around 60%. Between 1814 and 1815, 3 tons of silver was raised. Ore from the mine was smelted at nearby Weir Quay. The mine achieved a maximum depth of 250 fathoms below adit. The mine closed in 1885.

Production records report that as Tamar Silver Lead and Tamar Consols, between 1845 and 1876 - 14,640 tons of 62% lead ore and 326,300 ounces of silver were raised. Between 1879 and 1882, 780 tons of fluorspar was also raised.
