Moretonhampstead Town in Devon
The town of Moretonhampstead dates from about the 7th century, when the Saxons founded the settlement of 'Mor Tun'. It appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 and the growth of the town was largely dependent on the wool trade. Moretonhampstead with a current popuation of just 1,500 lies on Dartmoor and provides a convenient base from which to explore the eastern moor as well as being a convenient stopping off point between Okehampton and Newton Abbot or Torbay. Highlights if the area include Fernworthy Reservoir and forest, Chagford, Bovey Tracey, Manaton, Lustleigh and Widecombe-in-the-Moor as well as Hound Tor, Yarner Wood and the visitor attraction at Becky Falls.
