South Molton Town in Devon
Situated alongside the main road between Barnstaple and Taunton, South Molton is a market town of about 4,500 people.
The town dates from at least Saxon times and several of its manors including Brembridge, North and South Aller as wel as Hacche are mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Growing on the proceeds of the Wool trade, South Molton expanded from the Middle Ages until the coming of the railway in Victorian times. Its former place as an important coaching stop now superceded by easier rail travel.
Today, South Molton is an eclectic mix of traditional quality butchers and shops along with modern convenience stores with its highlights being the weekly Pannier Market and the Quince Honey Farm. Due to its proximity to Exmoor, it is an excellent area to use as a base to explore the area.
