Tavistock Town in Devon

Photograph of Tavistock

Located fifteen miles north of Plymouth, Tavistock is a small market town dating from Saxon times. The town sits on the River Tavy from which it gets its name. Tavistock grew to prominence between the 12th and 14th centuries and was granted a Pannier Market in 1105 by King Henry I. As the former woolen trade declined, Tavistock was given a new lease of life from the mining industry. Nearby deposits of tin and copper as well as lead, silver and manganese saw the town grow rich on the proceeds of processing and sales and become a stannary town. The Tavistock Canal was built and a railway branch line formerly connected the town. Its most famous person was Sir Francis Drake who was born here at Crowndale Farm. Tavistock became the 'Eastern Gateway' to the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site in 2006. Today, the town has a population of just over 11,000 and is the ideal base to explore West Devon, the Tamar and Tavy valleys as well as the west of Dartmoor. Highlights of the area include Morwellham Quay, Brent Tor, Lydford Gorge, Cotehele House as well as Burrator Reservoir, Wistmans Wood and the ancient Merrivale hut circles on Dartmoor.
