East Down village, Devon
East Down is a small village and civil parish in North Devon. It lies about nine miles northeast of the town of Barnstaple.
The parish includes the hamlets of Churchill, Shortacombe, Brockham and Clifton. It contains a church, pub and manor house.
W.G.Hoskins writes in his excellent book simply called 'Devon' (1954), that: 'East Down is the ancestral home of the Northcote family, of which Sir Stafford Northcote, 1st Earl of Iddesleigh, was the head. Northcote, now a farmhouse, was a Domesday manor. The family owed its rise mainly to a fortune made in the cloth trade at Crediton in the 16th century.'
