Dartmoor - Youth Hostels

There are three Youth Hostel Association Hostels serving Dartmoor as well as three YHA run camping barns:

• YHA Okehampton - This converted Victorian railway goods shed offers modern accommodation catering for the northern part of Dartmoor. The hostel has all the usual facilities including a Lounge and TV Lounge, Self-Catering Kitchen, Dining Room, a Laundry and Washing machine, Toilets, Camping Facilities and Wheelchair Facilities and Parking. it accepts credit cards and offers 102 beds with a range of 2,4 and 6 bed rooms. There are also family rooms available.
  
  Situated right on the northern edge of the National Park, at Grid Ref. SX 592944, the building doubles up as a licensed adventure centre specialising in providing activity holidays for families, groups and individuals. Some of the activities available are: rock climbing, pony trekking, gorge scrambling, treasure hunts and even archery. You can walk direct onto the moor from YHA Okehampton and you can buy several suggested walking routes and cards from its reception.

• YHA Bracken Tor (Dartmoor) - This newly converted country house and annex is set in four acres of gardens and offers a high standard of accommodation. It is managed by nearby YHA Okehampton and has 56 beds arranged in a number of options to suit. Situated right on the northern edge of the National Park, at Grid Ref. SX 588938, you can walk direct onto the northern moor from YHA Bracken Tor. Routes take you onto the high moor where stone circles, bronze-age huts, medieval deserted villages and old mining sites can all be seen.

• YHA Bellever - Situated right in the centre of Dartmoor at Grid Ref. SX 654773, Bellever Youth Hostel offers 38 beds in a range of formats to suit. Once part of a Duchy farm, YHA Bellever makes a comfortable, child-friendly retreat, with the nearby East Dart River, Bellever Forest and Bellever Tor ideal for family rambles. Children also love the Miniature Pony Centre where they can ride and groom the ponies. Great home cooked food using local ingredients is available on your return to the Youth Hostel. In 2008 YHA Bellever was a GTBS Gold award for its commitment to the environment.

• YHA Lydford Camping Barn - This camping barn, adjacent to the Fox and Hounds Hotel, lies on the western flanks of Dartmoor at SX 524866, midway between Lydford and Bridestowe alongside the A386. It has direct access onto Dartmoor. There are two sleeping areas, each with 6 bunk beds. The barn has electric light, but no catering area, although the adjacent pub serves breakfast and other meals. Some facilities will possibly be shared with campers. Electricity is on a meter. Nearest shop: 0.5 Miles.

• YHA Runnage Camping Barn - Two barns, one a former table hay loft and shippon, the other a converted stables - on a traditional working farm in the centre of Dartmoor, close to Bellever Forest and the River Dart at Grid Ref. SX 667792. Both sleep 15 people. A great location for walking, cycling, climbing, letterboxing and canoeing. Hot water for showers and electric light are included. Electricity for cooking and heating is extra. Kitchens are equipped with cooker, toaster, fridge and microwave. Mountain bikes available for hire on site. Minimum 2 night sole use bookings accepted at weekends and Bank Holidays. Nearest shop: 1.5 Miles. Nearest pub: 1.5 Miles

• YHA Great Hound Tor Camping Barn - A former farmhouse, on the eastern edge of Dartmoor near the village of Manaton, in the shadow of Hound Tor. Located at Grid Ref. SX 749795, it is close to Haytor, Saddle Tor and Widecombe in the Moor. There are two upstairs sleeping galleries that accommodate 14 people. The ground floor has a shower and a large recreation and cooking area with two Calor gas rings. There is metered electricity for the light and shower, wood is available for the open fire. No dogs please. Nearest pub: 1.5 Miles.
