Blackpool Sands
Granted a Blue Flag Award for 2015, Blackpool Sands is situated on the South coast of Devon, and is, in many peoples opinion the best beach in Devon.
It lies at the northern end of Start Bay, roughly midway between Strete and the mouth of the River Dart.
Southeast-facing, Blackpool Sands is just about half a mile southwest of the village of Stoke Fleming. The crescent shaped shingle beach is very scenic and is privately owned, it is backed by tall, fragrant pines. The beach has very good facilities and Blackpool Gardens directly behind the Sands are also worth a visit.
The beach offers: a bathing raft, kayaks for hire, a beach shop and sand pits. There is lifeguard cover during the summer months and a seasonal dog ban is in force.
Swimming is good at Blackpool Sands and the beach is cleaned daily in high season. Just behind the beach lies the very popular 'Venus Beach Café' offering organic and locally produced food.
The Venus Beach Shop sells beach gear and games. Kayaks and body boards are available for hire as well as wetsuits and snorkels. Other watersports available here include windsurfing and paddle boards as well as organised kayaking tours.
Access is easy from the nearby car parks and there are toilets, with disabled facilities, located just behind the beach.
Our advice is simple: This is a very popular beach and so please arrive early to get the full benefit of this wonderful location!
