Great Mattiscombe
Arguably one of the prettiest beaches in Devon, and otherwise known as Great Mattiscombe Sands, Mattiscombe Beach lies about a half mile (1 km.) south west of Start Point on the South Devon coast.
Southwest-facing the beach consists of pale yellow sand bordered mainly to the west by rocks as you near Limpet Cove. The amount of sand is large enough however to offer a great day out.
The topography of the cliffs shelters the beach, which offers fine views southwest over Lannacombe Bay to Prawle Point. The walk from the car park near Start Farm is particularly pleasing.
Points of interest nearby include Start Point lighthouse and Hallsands to the east and north. In the other direction, the South West Coast Path passes Lannacombe Beach, Woodcombe Sand and Horseley Cove before rounding Langerstone Point en route to Prawle Point.
