There are a number of ancient mines clustered around the coastal town of Combe Martin in North Devon. The silver-lead mines worked the floor of the Umber Valley, with the main workings on the northeast side of the valley to the east of the church. It is reported that some of the ancient workings date from the 13th century and were reworked in 1528 under Hochstetter. The mines worked on and off until the 18th Century.
