Shaldon Ness Beach
Shaldon lies on the south bank of the River Teign opposite Teignmouth on the South Devon coast.
Shaldon Ness Cove lies just around the headland known as The Ness. Southeast-facing, the beach lies directly below the red cliffs and consists of a mixture of typical red Devon sand and shingle.
Overlooked by the casual tourist, Shaldon Ness Cove is unusual in that it is accessed via an old Smuggler's tunnel, and then some steps down to the cove. Access for the less able is therefore difficult.
Popular with locals, Ness Beach offers a fine place to swim. Other activities here include beach fishing or, for younger members of your group, possibly hunting for shrimps in the rock pools at low water.
Like the main estuary beach, Ness Cove is just a short walk away from all the usual facilities one would expect. Parking is at the Ness car park with toilets sited nearby. The excellent Café Ode is well worth a visit as is Shaldon Zoo, home to the Shaldon Wildlife Trust.
Beware of cliff falls and take care where you sit.
There is no lifeguard cover at Shaldon Ness Beach. Dogs are permitted all year round.
