Drewsteignton Mine, Devon
Drewsteignton: grid reference SX730912
Situated near the village of Drewsteignton on north Dartmoor, this venture began life as two adits used to drain the limestone quarries some time in the 1830's. Although there are reports of some copper and silver-lead lodes the quest for ore came to nothing and there was no output recorded
Other reports state that 'In 1853 the Drewsteignton Copper, Silver-Lead, Tin and Limestone Mining Company began work on some old quarries to the north of Drewsteignton. By 1855 the company was reporting that gold had been found and it was yielding half an ounce per ton of gossan, 5 to 1,270 ounces silver per ton and 8% lead'.
