Birch Aller Mine, Devon
Moretonhampstead: grid reference SX826870
Otherwise known as Birch Ellers Mine, the pumping engine house was built in 1853 and housed a 30-inch pumping engine with an eight foot stroke. Birch Aller worked a lead lode from Old Engine Shaft and Pyes (or Whim) Shafts. It is situated at the northern end of the Teign valley about half a mile northwest of the hamlet of Bridford to the southwest of Exeter. The mine was not a success and the venture was up for sale in 1855. There are no records of production.
A chimney still stands on the site with a sign reading 'Birch Aller Mine 1853-56 repointed 1995" by the DNPA and the owners of Many Waters nearby'.
