Frementor Mine, Devon
Gunnislake: grid reference SX419726
Otherwise known as Framator, Wheal Frementor lies threequarters of a mile North Nor'West of Gunnislake, opposite Clitters Wood. The mine part of Devon Great Consols worked at river level on the steep eastern banks of the Tamar River. Lodes containing Cassiterite and Wolfram exist between 5-15 cm wide near the surface expanding to almost two metres wide at depth. Its main lodes were called North Lode and South Lode and it lay adjacent to South Fanny Mine in the east. The mine originated as an openwork but was developed during the First World War to a depth of 20 fathoms. It closed in 1919 but reopened briefly between 1925-29. In total about 12,000 tons of ore was raised but there is no recorded output. The main exploration took place to the north-west for about 100 metres including a very extensive open stope system known as a gunnis. The majority of the workings are flooded as they lie at river level.
