Druid Mine Mine, Devon
Ashburton: grid reference SX745716
A copper mine situated above Ashburton that worked a pair of lodes under a variety of names during its existence. Known as xxxxxxx it worked on and off over the years. In 1853 working now as Arundel Mine, the mine completed the sinking of Victoria Shaft within twelve months. A 30-inch pumping engine was ordered and installed by Nicholls & Williams of Tavistock. After a temporary break in 1855, the mine restarted as the Arundel Copper Mining Company. After another break in production the mine worked again as the Devon New Copper Mine in 1860. Its intermittent history continued with stops and starts throughout the 1860's working as the Druid Mining Company in 1866 and as the New Victoria (South Devon) Mine in 1869. This latest concern upgraded the original pumping engine with a 56-inch engine from the well respected Perran Foundry of Falmouth in Cornwall. The final reincarnation of the mine was as the Ashburton Tin and Copper Mining Company in 1872.
