Wrey Consols Mine, Devon
Buckfastleigh: grid reference SX716684
Wrey Consols mine was located on the south bank of the Holy Brook about three and a half miles northwest of Buckfastleigh.
The mine was known to be at work prior to 1850 before closing. Mining restarted in 1857 with the sett containing four lodes with black and yellow copper ores, and was traversed at its northern end by an extension of the Wheal Emma cross-course. By 1860, the main lodes had been proved for 60 fathoms, with an adit driven into the valley side providing backs of up to 180 feet. In 1861, with upwards of £1400 having been spent, the recorded output was a single ton of copper ore, which was sold for £8. The mine closed that year.
Although Hamilton Jenkin notes that the adit, the shaft and a small dump were clearly visible in 1959, the mine is not mentioned by either Dines or Collins.
