Wheal Jewell is situated 2 miles North Nor'East of Mary Tavy near Tavistock. The mine opened before 1797 and worked on and off until 1924. On some occasions it worked with nearby Wheal Friendship for tin and arsenic and receiving its power from Wheal Betsy. The mine worked North Lode, Middle Lode, South Lode as well as the smaller Hilltown Lode and Lowertown Lode from No.1, No.2, No.3 and No.4 Shafts as well as West Jewell (or New Shaft). North Shaft worked North Lode. The only record of output is 29 tons of arsenic in 1913 although the mine is also known to have yielded tin ore.
