Mineral extraction started here in about 1820. Devon United Mines are situated half a mile east of Mary Tavy and included the mines of North Devon United, Central Devon United and South Devon United. Otherwise known as East Wheal Friendship, North Devon United worked from Bennetts Lode whilst Central Devon United worked from Main Central Lode. South Devon United started life as Wheal Anne in 1845 and closed in 1854. It worked Main South Lode from Engine Shaft.
Production records report that: As Devon United - 1852 and 1905-13 387 tons of black tin was raised as well as 226 tons of copper ore in 1905-06 and 994 tons of arsenic between 1907 and 1913. As South Devon United for the period 1880-85 - 8,189 tons of 5.25% copper ore and in 1883 - 84 tons of mispickel (arsenopyrite). As East Friendship between 1846 and 1854 - 10,156 tons of 11.75% copper ore was raised.
