Christow: grid reference SX827815
Great Rock Mine is situated two miles northwest of Bovey Tracey. The mine dates from 1822 and extends over a large area. It produced high quality micaceous Hematite for use in rust preventing paint. Initially known as Hennock Iron and Tin Mine, the mine worked five iron lodes. They were Main South Lode, Middle Lode, Beadon Lode and two smaller North Lodes. In 1849 Hennock produced 1,600 tons of iron ore and production continued until 1889.
The mine was renamed Great Rock Mine in 1902. On reopening, peak production of about 2,500 tons per year was achieved in the 1940's, with the Royal Navy one of its biggest customers. There are also records of mining taking place as recently as 1969.
