South Exmouth Mine, Devon
Bovey Tracey: grid reference SX835807
Notable minerals: Galena.
Situated in northeast Dartmoor about two and a half miles from the village of Christow. Located near the Aller Mine between the setts of Frank Mills Mine in the south and Birch Aller Mine in the north, the mine was also known as Hennock Mine. Primarily a lead mine, it worked West and East Lodes from Westcomb's Engine Shaft, James' Shaft and a number of un-named ventilation shafts. South Exmouth is thought to have started work after a licence to mine was granted in 1812. The mine restarted as Wheal Hennock Silver, Lead, Copper and Manganese Mine in 1836 working into the early 1840's. In 1849 the mine restarted for a short while, restarting again in 1861 as South Exmouth, continuing until 1865.
Output is recorded as 867 tons of 71% lead ore and 3,156 ounces of silver between 1862 and 1867.
