Crowndale Mine is situated one mile southwest of Tavistock, to the east of Crebor Mine. The mine commenced working for copper in 1799 on a 900 metre (500 fathom) length of lode extracting ore fom some 18 shafts. The deepest, Engine Shaft, sunk to a the depth of 90 fathoms (165 metres). Other shafts include New East Shaft, Truscott's Shaft, Gill's Shaft, Vigur's Shaft, Eastern Engine Shaft, Mitchell's Shaft. A smelting plant was set up on the sett in 1833, smelting ores from many of the surrounding mines and also partly smelted tin ores from Dartmoor workings. The mine was prospected again in 1923-6 when a rich shoot of arsenic up to 4 feet thick was discovered though no extraction apparently took place.
Production records report that over 15,000 tons of copper ore, mainly during the 1820-30. Other returns include 562 tons of 4.25% copper ore for the period 1858-59, 1862 and 1874. In 1875 just over three tons of black tin were also raised.
